Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are everywhere. It's is estimated that approximately one in three people has had, or will have, an STD at some time in their lives (some without even knowing it). Some STDs are treatable once diagnosed, however many have no cure. The only sure way to avoid STDs is to abstain from sex, (an often unrealistic expectation), so the next best way to prevent catching an STD is to use condoms every time you have sex. Besides protecting you against STDs, condoms are also an excellent contraceptive. |
SOME FACTS ABOUT CONDOMS…
Most condoms are made from latex, a naturally derived product from the rubber tree. Although latex condoms are suitable for use by most, there are a small percentage of people who experience latex sensitivity. For these people there are non-latex condoms available, which are made from a polyurethane material.
The are three basic sizes of condoms: standard (usually 54mm), contoured and large (can be 2-4mm larger than standard, depending on brand).
Condoms have a shelf life. It is important to check the expiration date on condoms prior to use, as the quality of the latex diminishes over time. Using condoms that have passed their expiration date is dangerous and increases the risk of condom failure.
Condoms are affected by storage conditions. It is important to store condoms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. One of the worst places to keep a condom is in a back pocket – a shirt pocket is much safer.
• Condoms can also be damaged by using incorrect lubricants. Always use a water or silicone based lubricant and stay away from oil or petroleum based products. (These products tend to promote vaginal infections anyway.)
• Condoms undergo rigorous quality control tests at every point of the manufacturing process to ensure they meet the required standards. This includes testing for general strength, microscopic imperfections and holes.

DIRECTIONS FOR CONDOM USE…
 |
1. Use a new condom for each sex act.
2. Open the package carefully (don't bite it or use scissors).
3. Put on the condom when the penis is erect, but before any sexual penetration. (If the penis is uncircumcised, pull the foreskin back before putting on the condom).
4. Hold the condom by the tip and unroll it so it covers the entire erect penis. (If the condom doesn't unroll smoothly from the rim on the outside it's upside down.)
5. If the condom doesn't have a "reservoir end", squeeze tip of condom to remove air.
6. After ejaculation, hold the condom close to the base of the penis and carefully withdraw.
7. Immediately throw away used condoms in a suitable disposal.
NOTE: If you feel a condom break while having intercourse, stop and withdraw immediately. |
